Club History

Some background information about the club and how it was formed, many years ago....

The Leighton Buzzard, Stanbridge and District Riding Club is one of the oldest riding clubs in the country. Originating in 1949 on June 9th. A meeting was held at the Swan Hotel, Leighton Buzzard at which the following were present:
Messer’s W.A Gibbs, A.R.Timms, P. Westley, S. Chettle,
W.G. Abrahams, W.W. Abrahams, M.A Abrahams,
J. Chadwick, F. Olney, W. Boddington,
Mesdames H. Westley, M. Abrahams, P. Abrahams.

At this meeting it was decided to form the Leighton Buzzard, Stanbridge and District Riding Club.
All the above named plus Mr W Cockburn formed the first committee.
It was agreed that the aims of The Club should be as follows:

1.    To form an association in the Leighton Buzzard and Stanbridge District to improve facilities for the advancement of horsemanship and to encourage good sportsmanship, particularly amongst juveniles. 2.    To provide, if practicable, annual gymkhanas, shows, hunter trials etc. 3.    To give members of the club privileges and facilities such as reduced entry fees etc. 4.    To provide reasonable sport and entertainment amongst the members.

The first show was held at Stanbridge on Saturday August 20th 1949. The schedule included showing, affiliated B.S.J.A. jumping and a gymkhana. All events took place in one ring. The Club has continued without a break since 1949.

What Events do the club hold?

The club holds a variety of different events throughout the year. During the summer months Jumping and Showing shows are held. Throughout the winter the club holds Dressage events and clinics, which are held at Wing Equestrian Centre.

Who are the people who run the club?

The club is run by horse enthusiasts who voluntary give their free time to arrange all these events. The club has a committee who meet regularly to discuss items regarding latest horse issues and the clubs events.

GENERAL RULES AND CONDITIONS

1.     Leighton Buzzard Stanbridge & District Riding Club Officials and Stewards accept no responsibility for any loss or damage to property belonging to competitors, grooms or spectators or their person.

2.     The Committee reserves the right to refuse any entry, cancel a class, or amalgamate classes without prior notice or reduce prizes if insufficient entries.

3.     No persons other than Show Officials and competitors are allowed in the rings.

4.     The ages of competitors in the show shall be taken from 1st January 2008.

5.     The judge's decision is final on all points.

6.     Objections must be handed to the Show Secretary or her Assistant within thirty minutes of the class with a £50 DEPOSIT, which will be refunded if the objection is upheld or at the Secretary's discretion.

7.     No horse/pony under the age of 4 years may compete in any ridden classes.

8.     Hard hats must be worn at all times when mounted.  Hats to at least the new European standard must be worn during gymkhana and jumping events.

9.     MEMBERS MUST PRODUCE THEIR MEMBERSHIP CARDS IN ORDER TO OBTAIN REDUCED MEMBERS’ FEES.

10.  All dogs must be kept on leads.

11.  NO CANTERING OR GALLOPING ON THE SHOWGROUND EXCEPT IN DESIGNATED AREAS.

12.  All children under the age of 14 must be accompanied by a responsible person whilst on the showground.

13.  All exercising and lungeing to be done in the designated warm -up area.

14.  Horses or ponies tethered to trailers or horseboxes must not be left unattended.

15.  Any competitor falling off in any class will not be allowed to remount in the ring and will be disqualified from that class. This includes gymkhana races.

16.  Acceptance of these Rules is a condition of entry.
